Information on the preparation of the Cataloguing in Publication
The Matica Srpska Library, in accordance with Article 34, paragraph 1, point 16, of the Law on Library and Information Service (Official Gazette of the RS, no. 52/11), has the task of creating the Cataloguing in Publication (CIP).
CIP represents a preliminary, short catalogue record prepared according to international standards for a book prior to its publication; it contains the most relevant data on the bibliographic characteristics and content of the publication.
CIP is prepared for:
- monographic publications;
- serial publications and other continuous sources (new and current titles of magazines, collections of papers, yearbooks, and so on);
- non-book materials (printed music, phonodocuments, audiovisual materials, cartographic materials, posters, postcards, graphic maps, and the like);
- electronic sources (with local access).
At the publisher’s request, for articles and other contributions, a UDC number is assigned and/or a catalogue record is created for articles and other contributions from professional journals and periodicals.
At the publisher’s request, articles and other contributions from the collections of papers (monographic resources) are assigned a UDC number.
CIP is not made for advertising brochures and programmes, internal documents, pulp magazines, user manuals, invitations, leaflets, wall and other calendars that do not contain professional or literary contributions, planners without textual contributions, price lists of products and services, brochures of publishing houses, museums, and similar materials.
The publisher is obliged to print this catalogue record in the publication, in a visible place and without any graphic changes, as prescribed by the Professional Instructions for Cataloguing in Publication (CIP). It is very important for publishers to read this guide in its entirety.
The DOI number is assigned by the National Library of Serbia.
